5 Website Mistakes That Are Costing You Customers Right Now
We analyzed 100+ small business websites and found the same critical issues over and over. Here's what they are — and how to fix each one in under 10 minutes.
Your website is your 24/7 salesperson. But if it has any of these 5 issues, it's actively turning customers away — and you might not even know it.
After running AI-powered audits on over 100 small business websites, we found that 82% had at least 3 of these problems. The average score? A C+.
Here are the top 5 issues we see — ranked by impact on your bottom line.
1. Missing Meta Description
Found on: 50% of sites
Your meta description is the snippet that appears under your site in Google search results. Without one, Google makes one up — and it's usually terrible.
The fix: Add a 150-160 character description to every page. Include your main keyword and a call to action. Think of it as your elevator pitch in search results.
2. No H1 Heading
Found on: 37% of sites
The H1 tag tells both Google and visitors what your page is about. Without it, search engines struggle to understand your content — and visitors bounce faster.
The fix: Every page needs exactly one H1 heading. Make it clear, include your target keyword, and place it at the top of your content.
3. Missing Security Headers
Found on: 87% of sites
Security headers protect your visitors from attacks like clickjacking and cross-site scripting. Without them, your site is vulnerable — and Google notices.
The fix: Add headers like Strict-Transport-Security, X-Content-Type-Options, and Content-Security-Policy. Most hosting platforms make this easy through their dashboard.
4. No Structured Data
Found on: 75% of sites
Structured data (Schema.org markup) helps Google create rich search results — star ratings, prices, FAQs, and more. Sites with structured data get up to 30% more clicks.
The fix: Add JSON-LD structured data to your pages. At minimum, add Organization schema to your homepage and LocalBusiness schema if you serve a local area.
5. Images Without Alt Text
Found on: 68% of sites
Alt text describes images to search engines and screen readers. Without it, you're missing out on image search traffic and failing accessibility standards.
The fix: Add descriptive alt text to every image. Describe what's in the image and include relevant keywords naturally.
